Trades
Introduction
There are a wide variety of opportunities in every trade of the construction industry, including the support industries. Currently the construction industry is dealing with an aging workforce that is set to retire over the next several years. In fact, the workforce has been declining over the past 40 years. Construction jobs are expected to grow by 11% over the next 10 years. As of 2019, nationwide, we are about a million and a half short of employees in the construction industry. There are currently 1.4 million fewer people employed in construction than there were in 2007. A contribution to the decline is certain vocational trade programs, and in some cases all trade programs, being cut throughout schools across the nation and a higher focus put on four-year degrees, despite the rising cost. These and other reasons, it is opening up the additional need, to the current industry need, for new skilled workers. It is an industry with endless possibilities and many open doors to all trades in the industry. Without the influx of new skilled workers, it will impact the development and renovation of buildings that house our critical infrastructure.
Working side by side with hardworking, salt of the earth people, much like yourself, to achieve a single goal will provide you with a feeling of comradery, friendship and family. The sense of accomplishment and awe you will feel knowing that you were a contributor in the erection of a new skyscraper, industrial plant, school or home is an amazing feeling.

Type of Careers
Architure
Architects design structures such as houses, apartment complexes, shopping centers, office buildings, and factories. In addition to considering their physical appearance, they also make sure these structures will be functional, safe, economical, and suit the needs of the people who will use them.
Engineering
Engineering is a broad work category that refers to jobs that use science and mathematics to solve a variety of problems. Engineers work in disciplines that include mechanical, electrical, chemical, civil, and environmental engineering, among others.
Project Management
The role of a project manager is wide-ranging. A project manager assumes full responsibility for successfully initiating, designing, planning, controlling, executing, monitoring, and closing a project. These professionals work in a wide range of industries, although the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics classifies this type of manager as a construction position.
Approximately 471,800 project managers worked in the construction industry in 2018. (Bureau of Labor Statistics. “Construction Managers.” Accessed May 26, 2020.)
Inspector
A building and construction inspector is employed by a city or township, and inspects buildings for the purpose of making sure they are safe to use. The inspector does this by enforcing the building code, which has detailed and specific standards that need to be adhered to in order to pass inspection.
The building inspected could be a new-build, a remodelling project, or even a prospective real estate purchase that needs an inspection.
Surveyors
Surveyors determine legal property boundaries. They provide data and compile legal documents—called surveys—for building, mapmaking, and real estate projects. Those who work in this discipline might be called land, site, or property surveyors.
